About Betfair
A Betting Revolution

BETFAIR WAS FOUNDED AROUND ITS PIONEERING BETTING EXCHANGE, WHICH ENABLES CUSTOMERS TO COME TOGETHER AND BET AGAINST EACH OTHER, RATHER THAN AGAINST A BOOKMAKER

Betfair was founded around its pioneering Betting Exchange, cutting edge technology which enables customers to come together and bet against each other, rather than against a bookmaker.

Betfair makes money by taking a small commission on the transaction. Because this business model does not involve any financial risk, the odds displayed have no inbuilt profit margin and they therefore typically deliver better value than a fixed odds bookmaker. Winning customers are also welcomed, rather than having their accounts closed as can be the case at other bookmakers.

Several other elements of the Exchange also work to provide more betting choice to customers. Since markets are only closed at the end of an event, customers are able to continue trading their position when an event goes 'in-play". Through this trading functionality Betfair customers have the ability to lock in a profit, or mitigate a loss, with a Cash Out tool performing these calculations automatically for customers who do not always bet with a calculator at hand!

Today Betfair's Exchange processes over 1.2 billion bets a year, with a trading value of £56 billion. To put this into some context this is more transactions than all the major European Stock Exchanges combined.
